Alienarium VR

Alienarium VR

Alienarium VR

Alienarium is a multi-user VR experience that initiates an embodied consideration of extraterrestrial life. Letting you explore a floating universe by embodying one of the five alien bodies, this experience also makes it possible to provoke encounters between these mysterious and fascinating entities.

Presented at the Serpentine Gallery in London as part of the Alienarium 5 exhibition, this virtual reality artwork was imagined by artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, produced by VIVE Arts and developed by Lucid Realities.

Responsible for graphic and interactive development, I was in charge of giving substance to Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster‘s vision by visually creating the universe, the different aliens and the interactions between the bodies, and we worked together to to create the strongest possible feeling of embodiment in order to strengthen the depth of the experience. Alienarium VR was built on the Unity engine and deployed on VIVE Pro VR headsets.

Alienarium follows on from Endodrome, Gonzalez-Foerster’s VR piece presented at the Venice Biennale (2019). In this new VR experience, visitors are invited to explore in and through one of five distinct extraterrestrial bodies, transporting them out of their own human experience. Encounters with other alien beings expand understandings of connection, asking how we might relate to one another when untethered from our physical forms.
