The Scottish city of Edinburgh is world famous for its 12 festivals which overlap during the year. This summer I had the chance to attend the peak of the festival season, the month of August, with no fewer than five festivals grouped under the website Edinburgh Festival City! The festivals of Edinburgh were born in 1947, after World War II, with the will to bring nations together by creating a platform to celebrate the arts and culture.
Between the Fringe Festival, dedicated to the performing arts and involving more than 3260 different shows, the Edinburgh Art Festival, which offers art exhibitions in over 40 locations, the Edinburgh International Festival, which proposes dance, opera, music and theatre, the Edinburgh Book Festival, dedicated to writing and literature, and of course the legendary Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a celebration featuring every night over 1000 performers, Edinburgh achieves an incredible large cultural gathering! An effervescence that let me see in only a few days a dozen exhibitions, many circus, theatre or dance shows, parties in the numerous beer gardens installed in the city, and many weird and crazy performances to discover randomly in the streets. Note that 2016 also saw the emergence of a sixth festival, the Edinburgh Digital Entertainment Festival, dedicated to the digital arts and entertainment.
I invite you strongly to experience the Edinburgh Festivals by yourself, and I invite you to discover in pictures this cultural explosion, which turns the city of Edinburgh in a giant festival, bubbling, eclectic and fascinating !
