With his series simply entitled Self, the British artist Marc Quinn creates self-portraits with his own blood. For this strange and disturbing project started in 1991, the artist creates a new bust of himself every 5 years to document his aging. The artist has the equivalent of a pint of blood extracted every week by a doctor, which will then be used to fill a mold of his head. These amazing blood sculptures are then frozen, the only way to preserve them through time. Behind the very disturbing effect of these organic sculptures, virtually alive, the artist Marc Quinn questions the notion of identity and gives a new meaning to the word self-portrait.
