The “Alternative Limb Project” was born in the mind of the designer Sophie de Oliveira Barata, who had the idea to reconsider the approach of prosthetics, using the regard of art and design, as objects that is shown, not that we try to hide. Her design studio has thinked three trends, “realistic”, “surreal” and “unreal”, and now has created some absolutely gorgeous prosthetic legs or arms…

Living Street Art – The living paintings of Alexa Meade

We already talked about the artist Alexa Meade, who uses living models as support for her hyper-realistic acrylic paintings, to carry her creations into reality. In this new series, Alexa Meade turns to street art, painting her models as monochrome stencils to integrate them on graffiti-filled walls. The results are really impressive, and it’s hard to tell the difference between her living models and the wall paintings! DNA Portraits – 3D portraits of strangers created from DNA fragments found in the street

The artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg mix art of information and genetic to produce some amazing 3D portraits of strangers, just from DNA found in the street. Indeed, the artist collects DNA samples in the public space from cigarette butts, old chewing gum or hair, in order to extract the genetic heritage. The DNA is then sequenced to extract the information regarding easily recognizable appearance features, such as hair color, skin, eyes, or gender… Heather Dewey-Hagborg then uses a software for comparing the informations extracted from the stranger’s DNA to the common DNA in human, and then convertes them into a 3D portraits of their owner thanks to a 3D printer… A beautiful encounter between art and science which raises the question of determinism, anonymity, surveillance and ownership of such informations.
