Onbashira Matsuri – A Japanese festival as dangerous as spectacular

2016-06-01 // unusual japan videos

The Onbashira Matsuri, or the festival of sacred pillars, is a traditional Japanese festival held every six years in Nagano, which is as dangerous as spectacular! During the festival, participants move and ride four massive tree logs with bare hands, weighing up to 10 tons, accompanied by dances, music and songs. Truly impressive! Born from the Shinto religion, the Onbashira Matsuri is a unique festival that celebrates for over 1200 years the renewal and replacement of the four large wooden pillars of the great sanctuary.
