Moss Men – Two photographers document a strange Spanish tradition

2015-07-15 // unusual photography

With their Moss Men series, artistic director Gem Fletcher and photographer David Vintiner wanted to document the Spanish tradition of El Hombre de Musgo, held annually in the town of Béjar, where residents are covered with moss and wander around the city. This Christian tradition celebrates the reconquest of the city in the 14th century, after its invasion by the Moors, successful thanks to these strange costumes made of moss, which enabled the liberators to approach the city without being spotted.
