Star Wars – The incredible hand-painted scenes of the original trilogy

To bring life to its universe, the original Star Wars trilogy has used the technique of matte painting: some very detailed paintings, hand-made, which served as sets for the movies. Long before the massive use of 3D, CGI and green screen, the ILM teams painted the backgrounds and scenes of Star Wars on large plates of plexiglass, which were then inserted behind the actors and the real sets .

I propose here a selection of the matte painting used for the original Star Wars trilogy, with some impressive paintings by artists Chris Evans, Mike Pangrazio, Frank Ordaz, Harrison Ellenshaw and Ralph McQuarrie.
