For the third part of Kings of Cocaine, the documentary produced by VICE, we follow the Peruvian police in pursuit of coca suppliers, who grow and prepare the famous plant on behalf of the cartels. In the depths of the jungle in the province of Huallaga, the armed police track down the clandestine laboratories to destroy the source that feeds organized crime and drug trafficking networks. This region was the main supplier of the Medellin cartel, the cartel of Pablo Escobar, and the authorities are still struggling to completely eradicate the drug production, trying to find new crops, like cocoa, that substitute the traditional coca economy.
Today, many countries around the world are still grappling with the aftermath of Pablo Escobar‘s reign 20 years after his death, from his army of young hitmen, the Sicarios, to the numerous cocaine laboratories, through the clandestine air strips in the jungles of Peru. I also recommend you the Narcos series, inspired by the life of Pablo Escobar, available on Netflix.
