You really are of the track, in judging contemporary Pop / Dance music on the basis of your comparisons with Classical instruments. But it's totally right to consider chord sequences in Pop and nearly non-existing in Dance / Rap are as basic as a chord can be.
Pop singers have typically a limited vocal range in which their vocals work best (producers key changes to fit). This may dictate for most Pop/Dance singers/bands... even though some vocalists are amazing as to a wide range.
By the way, my mom did an arrangement of the Ace Of Base song "All That She Wants" for a Classical-style guitar duet. That was very popular at a Zürich music school. You're a chamber orchestra... you may consider re-arranging some suitable Pop song and startle the audience performing it.

Quite a bad comparison imho. Slagging artists wouldn't make anyone love classical music more. Is that all you could think of?
